“Where’s the Event?”

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

My sis Terri and her kids, Robbie and Veronica posed for a shot to commemorate the “Great Tool Event” at Ace Hardware tonight. And to think we only went there to buy hooks to string some Christmas lights! How lucky were we, to stumble upon such a GREAT EVENT?

Ace employees gave us odd looks when we walked in announcing we were there for the “event.” When we asked where the “event” was, they directed us towards the back of the store. All they had there were a bunch of tools for sale, and the restrooms! — Some stinkin’ “Great Event”!

Odd Admissions…

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Very often, while I’m walking down a staircase, I inexplicably hear the Patty Duke Show theme song in my head…

“Meet Cathy, who’s lived most everywhere,
From Zanzibar to Barclay Square.
But Patty’s only seen the sights
A girl can see from Brooklyn Heights — What a crazy pair! …”

When I was a kid, I indulged myself in a day dream of being adopted by Elton John’s lead guitarist; Davey Johnstone. I didn’t realize at the time that he was only about 10 years older than I was. And, it wasn’t that I didn’t love my father… my father was GREAT! I just thought it would be REALLY REALLY cool to have a “Dad” with crazy long blond hair like Davey Johnstone’s show-up at my school on parent-teacher night! Plus, I figured if Davey Johnstone would adopt me, then Elton John would probably be like an uncle to me… and he would shower me with LOTS of NICE presents on my birthday — and maybe even buy me a pony!

Today’s Thoughts…

by Liz von Achen

Remember how Chinese restaurants ALWAYS used to give tea bags with your take-out order? Every restaurant did it. You ALWAYS got a couple of complimentary tea bags along with your soy sauce, duck sauce, mustard and noodles. Tea bags were just a standard part of the Chinese Take-Out package.

I don’t know when exactly it happened. I guess I started noticing a couple of years ago that the tea bags were missing. Truthfully, I rarely ever used the tea bags, so I never bothered to complain, or even ask why they weren’t included anymore.

It seems like ALL the Chinese restaurants stopped giving out free tea bags at just about the same time, and that perplexes me.

I mean, is there some kind of Chinese restaurant consortium, or guild that decides take-out policies for all Chinese restaurants? Did they do a survey of Chinese food take-out customers to ask whether or not they actually use the free tea bags? Did they all choose a specific date when the free tea bag program would end at every Chinese restaurant across the country?

Anyway, my eye is still puffy and red today. A friend suggested I make some tea and then put the tea bag on my eye afterwards (assuming of course that the bag has cooled down – duh – it would be just like me to complicate things further by placing a scalding hot tea bag on my face). According to my friend, there’s something in the tea leaves that’s supposed to help reduce inflammation.

Of course, all my tea bags are at the old place. And I can’t go out in daylight. Gawd, that sounds so ‘vampiress’. And I can’t find my eye patch. Gawd, that sounds so ‘pirate-like’. If only Chinese restaurants still gave you free tea bags, I would order some take-out.

Why, oh, why can’t I find even ONE Chinese restaurant that still gives free tea bags?

I wonder if coffee grinds would work?
